Professional Experience
2009 – 2014 Director General, KB, National Library of the Netherlands
Manage all services and processes of the national library. Supervise a staff of 370 and responsible for a € 50 million budget. Advise the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research on matters relating to cultural heritage, information infrastructure and scholarly communication.

Main activities and/or achievements: •Initiating and managing an innovation process aimed at a focus on digital collections, services and preservation, including the start of public-private partnerships with (a.o.) Google. •Strengthening the central position of the KB within the national information infrastructure by enhancing the cooperation with all publicly financed libraries in the Netherlands. •Integrating into the KB the management of the network of public libraries and of the digital infrastructure for public libraries, thus initiating a national digital library.1994 – 2009University Librarian, Utrecht University, the Netherlands

Main activities and/or achievements: •Managing the ongoing innovation of the library aimed at achieving high quality digital services and a large electronic collection. •Creating a repository of the university’s publications and a university E-Press that publishes Open Access journals. •Implementing the so-called Virtual Knowledge Centres that provide research groups with virtual work spaces with integrated library services. •Managing the complex reorganisation of the library whereby the traditional decentralised structure with twenty branch libraries was replaced by a centralised and more efficient organisation based on the concept of shared services. •Realising a modern, flexible library building on the university campus that has won several awards and is proving popular with its users.1994Acting Manager for the Media Institute, Utrecht University (6 months)
